Nearly 180 galleries and art institutions from around the world have signed up to participate in Art Shenzhen 2018, up by more than 30 percent from last year, figures provided by the organizer show.
Many galleries in China’s art districts, such as the Pedder Building in Hong Kong, H Queen’s and West Bund in Shanghai, and 798 Art District and Caochangdi Art District in Beijing, are among the applicants with international influence, said Ye Jianqiang, general manager of Art Shenzhen and secretary general of the organizing committee of Art Shenzhen 2018.
Ye said the active participation of galleries from around the world shows the market value of Art Shenzhen and the attractiveness of Shenzhen’s art market. The reaction from the art circle “indicates that Art Shenzhen has built a good reputation in the industry.”
The large number of applications to exhibit at Art Shenzhen 2018, to be held Sept. 14-17 at Hall 6 of Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, has put new pressures on the organizing committee when considering the market capacity and the space limitations of the exhibition venue.
The organizer will adhere to “small scale, quality and excellence” in the organization of this year’s event.
“We focus our optimization efforts on the extraction of the characteristics of the event, the improvement of the quality of gallery exhibitors and the consolidation of the contemporary art market platform,” said Ye.
“We will take advantage of Shenzhen’s proximity to Hong Kong and Macao, and being at the heart of the Pearl River Delta, to develop in a sustainable manner,” said Ye, adding that the expo needs professional galleries from more countries and regions to expand its influence by paying attention to vigorous emerging art institutions.
Nearly one-third of this year’s exhibitors are first-timers. “The new galleries will not only inject new blood and vitality into the event, but also provide visitors with rich experiences, while further promoting the diversification and globalization of Art Shenzhen as a platform,” he said.
Art Shenzhen will invite more than 1,000 VIP clients, especially new art collectors from the Greater Bay Area, to this year’s event. “We want to develop more young art collectors who have confidence in Art Shenzhen by organizing various professional events and getting our VIP clients involved.”
By leveraging the brand advantages of the ICIF, Art Shenzhen will collaborate with ICIF’s 67 subvenues (culture & creative industrial parks) across the city to further develop the new market and offer more forms of art trading at the event.
This year’s event will consist of eight exhibition sectors, including four Main Gallery sectors, two Public Art sectors, one Art Derivative sector, and one Site Activities sector. The Main Gallery sectors will have more than 3,000 contemporary art exhibits from 68 galleries and four nonprofit institutions on display, taking the form of multiple creative mediums and fully representing a rich art landscape in a diverse array of directions. Visitors will see the important works of a number of celebrated artists, such as Yu Youhan, Ding Yi, Zhang Enli, Zhou Chunya, Jia Aili, Jannis Kounellis, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Carsten Hoeller, Antony Gormley, Yayoi Kusama and Yoshitomo Nara. The event is guaranteed to bring visitors an experience of a world-class contemporary art exhibition. In the Public Art sectors, visitors will see Prototype 0, a cooperative project between Hitachi and He An. Florentijn Hofman, an artist from the Netherlands, will bring his Bubblecoat Elephant II 1/7 and Kraken 1/7. We will also see Time Narrating #1, an installation by American Steve Tobin. At the Art Derivative sector, visitors will see creative art derivatives, such as limited-edition sculptures, photos and prints. Activities will be taking place at the site, including forums and lectures on relevant topics.
