This year, Beijing will hold 908 chongyang, or Double Ninth Festival (the ninth day of the lunar ninth month) theme activities, Beijing municipal civil affairs bureau and municipal aging office announced on October 14.
The activities to celebrate the festival include the traditional ones like climbing mountains, visiting elders and fun sports games and the new interesting ones with a technological feel, bringing a different festival atmosphere to elders and their families.
Among them, the municipal civil affairs bureau and the municipal aging office will host 11 activities, including the ceremonies to unveil 2018 “Model filial piety stars” and 2018 talented elders within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, anti-fraud dramas, rights protection publicity activities, the 6th senior culture festival and others.
Currently, the 2018 “Model filial piety stars” campaign has finished voting and it will select 10 models this year. The annual “Filial piety star” naming and rewarding activity was initiated in Beijing in 2010, and it has named 59,000 stars in Beijing as of the end of 2017.
This year, the municipal cultural committee and districts have made great efforts in organizing new and creative activities for citizens to feel the traditional culture of chongyang during the festival.
For example, the Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture will give lectures on filial piety and hold parent-children tea parties on the Double Ninth Festival on October 17 and the weekends on October 13,14, 20 and 21. Capital Museum will open chongyang theme exhibitions and Beijing Stone Carving Art Museum will work with Beixiaguan Subdistrict to give lectures on chongyang customs and organize elders to visit Wuta Temple.
The theme activities hosted by the 16 districts are abundant and most of them will last till the end of the year. Haidian District will hold 260 activities during the festival, with the number ranking first among districts, ranging from kitchen ventilator cleaning activities to anti-fraud and legal knowledge lectures and free clinic activities for the elderly.
In addition, the activities to popularize scientific knowledge among elders are clearly on the rise this year. Social worker teams will open classes in Yanqing District to teach the elderly how to use electronic products, watch live webcasts and read online news, and experts from the fields of public security, commerce, banking, etc. will give a series of popular science knowledge lectures on anti-fraud, rumor dispelling and healthy consumption.
